The Cold Case Playing Cards is a standard deck of 52 playing cards with one important exception. Each card carries a photograph and factual information on one of the almost 100 unsolved murders in Polk County.
These cards were distributed in the Polk County Jail during 2005. It didn’t take long for the payoff. In November of 2005, two individuals were arrested for the murder of Thomas Grammar based on a tip from an Inmate who saw the cards, recognized Grammar and decided to come forward with what he knew.
The cards have gained national attention. On March 30, 2006, the CBS Morning news did a story on the cards, and interviewed Detective Brad Grice of the Lakeland Police Department, the lead Investigator on the Grammar case, and Cold Case Team Coordinator and Special Agent for the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, Tommy Ray. Since then, agencies throughout the station and nation have began their own program to help generate leads in an effort to solve long since forgotten murders.
