What to know when a loved one goes missing

FOLLOW THESE STEPS

What to Do When a Loved One Goes Missing

The disappearance of a loved one is a profoundly distressing and frightening experience. Knowing what to do in those initial crucial moments can significantly impact the search efforts. Here's a guide to help you navigate this difficult situation:

1. Contact Law Enforcement Immediately

  • File a Missing Person Report: This is the most crucial step. Provide as much detail as possible to the police, including:
    • Full Name and Date of Birth:
    • Physical Description: Height, weight, hair and eye color, distinguishing features (scars, tattoos, piercings).
    • Last Known Location and Time:
    • Clothing Description:
    • Medical Conditions: Any existing illnesses, medications, or allergies.
    • Recent Behavior: Any unusual behavior, changes in mood, or signs of distress.
    • Personal Belongings: Missing items like phone, wallet, keys, or vehicle.
  • Obtain a Case Number: This is essential for tracking the investigation.

2. Gather Information

  • Contact Friends and Family: Reach out to anyone who may have recently contacted the missing person.
  • Check Social Media: Review their social media accounts for any clues about their whereabouts or recent activities. Record and note all page information to include recent contacts, who has commented on a post, all friends and connections.
  • Search Personal Belongings: Look for any notes, letters, or electronic devices that may provide insights.

3. Start a Search

  • Check Common Locations: Hospitals, shelters, jails, and places they frequent.
  • Drive Their Common Routes: Go out and drive the path your loved one would typically take. When safe, stop in areas where they could have run off the road. Watch for skid marks and anything out of the ordinary. Only exit your vehicle when it is safe to do so.
  • Distribute Flyers: Create and distribute flyers with the missing person's photo and information in local areas.
  • Utilize Online Resources:
    • NamUs (National Missing and Unidentified Persons System): https://namus.nij.ojp.gov/
      • A national database for missing and unidentified persons.
    • National Center for Missing & Exploited Children: https://missingkids.org/home
      • For missing children.

4. Support Yourself and Others

  • Seek Emotional Support: Connect with friends, family, or support groups. Consider professional counseling.
  • Maintain Hope: While the situation is difficult, maintain hope and continue the search.

Remember: Every missing person case is unique. These are general guidelines. If you suspect foul play, inform law enforcement immediately.

TXSAR

This is a law enforcement resource in Texas that can help authorities search for your loved one in Texas. While you cannot request them as a citizen, you can request your local law enforcement to call them. Again, this is Texas only and, quite frankly, a fantastic service. If not in Texas, check your state services online. Be your own First Responder.
